The Sleep Investigation Unit provides specialised tests to diagnose and assess sleep‑related breathing and sleep disorders. These investigations help identify conditions that affect breathing during sleep and guide treatment and follow‑up care.

How does a sleep study work?
A sleep study involves making several non-invasive measurements of the body’s functions during sleep. They include EEG (brain waves), eye movements, muscle tone, airflow during breathing, oxygen levels, electrocardiogram and leg movements as well as overnight video.
Home based sleep testing, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) titrations and other more complex sleep testing can also be performed at the request of your referring specialist.
Referrals – how to access the service
A referral is required to access this service. Referrals are usually made by:
- General practitioners (GPs)
- Sleep/respiratory specialists
Referrals must be made using the Gosford Hospital Sleep Investigation Unit referral form.

You must meet the criteria specified on the referral to be eligible for testing. Your referring doctor will provide details about the tests required.
Booking your test
Once you have a completed referral form from your doctor it can be faxed or emailed to the Sleep Investigation Unit:

Once the referral is received it will be triaged and added to the waitlist. When a time becomes available you will then be contacted by sleep unit staff.

Before your sleep study
When booked for a sleep study, the sleep laboratory staff will contact you by phone to confirm the time and date of attendance, as well as email you an information sheet explaining preparation and procedures for testing.
Costs
There is no cost for patients with a valid Medicare card when referred by a respiratory/sleep specialist.

The Sleep Investigation Unit is located on level 3 of Gosford Hospital. From the main entrance on level 4, walk towards the lifts (I block), take the lift to level 3. Exit the lift and turn right. Follow the signs to the Chest Clinic/Sleep Investigation Unit.
