An action plan is a simple, step by step guide that helps you choose one small, realistic action to work toward your goals. It turns big ideas – like “get healthier” or “feel better” – into clear steps you can follow.
When it comes to your health, you might catch yourself saying, “I know what I should do, but I don’t know where to start.” Starting something new can feel overwhelming. Writing down what you want to do can help you feel more organised and accountable. Having an action plan makes it easier to focus on the things you can do to improve your health, well being, and happiness.
Follow these five steps to help you get started and on your way
Step 1
Decide what you want to do
Step 2
Ask yourself can I do this in the week ahead
Step 3
Action – is my plan action specific? Getting fit is the goal but getting exercise is the action
Step 4
Ask yourself:
- what will I do? … I’m going to go for a walk
- how much will I do? … I will walk for 30 minutes
- when will I do it? … after breakfast
- how often will I do it? … Monday & Friday morning
Step 5
Confidence: on a scale of 1-10, how confident am I that I can do my action plan? … 8/10 – I have no other commitments
If your confidence level is 7 or below, that’s a sign your action plan needs adjusting – not that you’ve failed. A lower score simply means the plan is too big, too hard, or not realistic for your week right now.
What to do if your confidence level is 7 or below
Make the action smaller
Choose a version of the task that feels easier to start
Change how often you plan to do it
If twice a week feels too much, try once a week.
Change the timing
Pick a time when you’re more likely to follow through.
Remove barriers
Ask yourself what’s making it hard, do you need to prepare the night before, do you need someone to remind you, do you need to choose an
easier task?
Rescore your confidence
Once the plan smaller or easier, check again. Aim for 8, 9, or 10.
A confidence score is a tool that helps you shape a plan you can actually succeed. Small steps build momentum, and momentum builds confidence.
