The Radiation Oncology Department at the Central Coast Cancer Centre in Gosford provides advanced radiation therapy and cancer care services through a team of specialist healthcare professionals.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to destroy cancer cells, prevent them from growing and spreading, help control disease and improve quality of life. It is a safe and effective treatment for many types of cancer.
Around half of all people diagnosed with cancer may benefit from radiation therapy at some stage of their treatment.
Radiation therapy is tailored to each patient by a radiation oncologist. Treatment plans are based on the patient’s overall health, the type, size and location of cancer and whether the goal is to cure the cancer, relieve symptoms or compliment other treatments.
The treatment is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists and nurses – working together to provide safe, accurate and patient-centred care.
Most radiation therapy treatments are provided on an outpatient basis, Monday to Friday. It may be combined with other cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and surgery.

External beam radiation therapy
Our highly skilled radiation therapists use advanced technology to treat a broad range of cancers.
The Central Coast Cancer Centre is equipped with three Varian TrueBeam® linear accelerators, including a TrueBeam® Edge with HyperArc™ capabilities.
We offer a range of specialised treatment techniques that allow highly accurate treatment of cancer while minimising exposure to healthy tissue, including:
- Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
- Stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SABR)
- Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)
- Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
- Motion management techniques – deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) and expiration breath hold (EBH).
Superficial and orthovoltage radiation therapy
Superficial and orthovoltage radiation therapy is delivered by radiation therapists using the Xstrahl treatment system, primarily to treat skin cancers and other conditions affecting the skin surface.
