Central Coast Local Health District provides a range of support services, resources and facilities to assist staff, students and partners undertaking research activities.
These services support researchers across all stages of the research process – from planning and data collection to analysis, publication and knowledge sharing.
Research support services
Education and training
The Research Office supports research capability building by coordinating and promoting education and training opportunities for staff and students including:
- Research workshops and masterclasses.
- Training sessions delivered in partnership with Library Services, the Nursing & Midwifery Directorate and university partners.
- Networking and mentoring opportunities.

Biostatistics and data support
Central Coast Health staff and students can access advice and support for research, quality improvement projects and grant applications from a biostatistician through the research office. Support may include advice on study design and data analysis, results interpretation and support with grant applications. To access biostatistical support please contact the research office with details of your project and the departments involved.
Accessing patient records and data
The Health Information Services team works with the Research Office to support approved access to patient records and data for research activities.
Support includes endorsement of quality improvement requests involving medical records and organising access to electronic medical records for approved researchers. Consumer and community engagement
Meaningful consumer and community engagement is an important component of high-quality health and medical research.
Researchers are encouraged to refer to guidance and tools provided by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to support engagement with consumers throughout the research lifecycle.

Aboriginal health research support
Central Coast Local Health District is committed to respectful, ethical and culturally appropriate research involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
Researchers undertaking Aboriginal health research must follow:
- The Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) Ethical Guidelines
- The NHMRC Ethical conduct in research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities.
Projects focussed on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health may require review by the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) Human Research Ethics Committee. Researchers are encouraged to contact the AH&MRC early to confirm ethics review requirements.

Library services
Central Coast Local Health District Library Services provide information, training and resources to support evidence-based practice, research and education. Library services are available to Central Coast Health staff and University of Newcastle staff and students based at Central Coast Health locations, and include:
- Literature searching and reviews
- Information and research support
- Inter-library loans (articles and books)
- One-on-one and small group training
- Support using databases and reference management tools (e.g. EndNote).
Online resources, including CIAP and database access are available to staff with a Stafflink ID.

CARE – Archive and research elibrary
The Central Coast Local Health District Archive and Research eLibrary (CARE) is a digital repository that preserves and shares our research output and history. It includes:
- Historical archive – documenting history of public health services on the Central Coast
- Research hub – a collection of published research by current and former Central Coast Health staff.
CARE captures publications produced under the various names of the organisation over time and supports access to Central Coast Health research outputs.

Student support and university partnerships
Central Coast Health works closely with the University of Newcastle Central Coast Clinical School to support students undertaking clinical placements, education and research on the Central Coast. The Clinical School provides:
- Access to teaching hospitals and community settings.
- Support for medical students, including Aboriginal student support.
- Opportunities for research and education aligned with Central Coast Health priorities.
Students enrolled in the Joint Medical Program (JMP) may undertake placements and studies on the Central Coast in collaboration with our services.
