Turtles provided a food source for Darkinyung (Darkinjung) people at certain times of the year. Turtles are also a symbol of strength, survival and freedom despite the odds – they sit alongside the longest living culture on Earth. There are only seven marine turtle species worldwide of which six live in Australian waters. The green turtle, the loggerhead turtle and leatherback turtle are some of the marine turtles around our coastal waters.
