Older People and Mental Health

Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People (SMHSOP) provides services for people 65 years and over experiencing moderate to severe mental health problems.  Services can include assessment, treatment and care planning, working closely with carers, families, General Practitioners and other support services, providing training programs and mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention initiatives.  These services can be provided in the community and in hospital.

In the community

Services are provided in the person’s home, including residential aged care facilities such as hostels and nursing homes.

Behavioural Assessment and Intervention Service (BASIS)

As part of its Behavioural Assessment and Intervention Service (BASIS), the community team also provides assessment and intervention services to older people experiencing moderate to very severe behaviours associated with dementia (for example, resistance to care, agitation and aggression).

In hospital

Miri Miri is an acute inpatient mental health unit for people over the age of 65 years. It is based at Wyong Hospital in the Wyong Mental Health Centre.
