The Respiratory Investigation Units

  • measure most aspects of lung function
  • provide advice and education for health professionals and patients about respiratory disease.

The Units are accredited by the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and meet international standards.

All testing at Gosford and Wyong hospitals is bulk-billed.

Common tests available

We provide a wide range of respiratory function tests. Your local GP will be able to determine which tests are needed to check your breathing or to assess your response to treatment. Below are some of the common tests.

Spirometry and lung volumes

Spirometry is a test that measures how much air is in your lungs when fully inflated and how quickly you can empty the air out of your lungs in a single breath.

Lung volumes testing gives the doctor information about the health and size of your lungs.

Gas transfer and arterial blood gases

These tests measure how well the lungs get oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the body. By measuring arterial blood gases the doctor can check the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in your blood.

Allergy and asthma testing

A number of breathing tests can check if your lung function changes due to problems like asthma. Skin prick testing can also be done to check if allergies are causing the asthma.

Other specialised testing

Other tests that can be ordered by your doctor can measure your oxygen levels at night during sleep, test your safety for travelling in planes, and check your exercise capacity.

Booking procedure

All tests require a completed Respiratory Investigation Unit request form signed by your doctor. Your doctor can obtain a request form from the Gosford Hospital RIU.

Bookings can be made by phone between 8:00am and 4:30pm weekdays on 4320 3529.
